Internship Detail

[Back to Internships]

Company Name: THE EXPERIMENT
Description: We are looking for an intern motivated by the opportunity to learn about the book publishing business from the unique perspective of an independent trade publishing company. Candidates are asked to (ideally) commit to up to two full days (about 16 hours total) a week. Work hours are flexible between 9:30 and 6:30, Monday through Friday.

Our design internship is a chance to learn about all aspects of both print and digital book publishing in a small, friendly environment. We offer a hospitable, low-stress work environment, and great opportunities to gain hands-on publishing experience and contacts in the industry as well as an in-depth understanding of the publishing process, as practiced by an established independently owned and run publisher.

Our intern will work closely with the art director and designer. Interns will get the chance to gain experience and develop skills designing promotional materials such as sell sheets, postcards, event signage, and web banners, as well as help with text corrections on interiors of books, and doing photo research.
Length of Internship: Flexible, but we ask for at least a 3-month commitment
Requirements: Highly desirable requirements are a firm grasp of Mac platform, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and font management software. Must be detail-oriented, have the ability to take direction and multitask, and willing to help out in all aspects of the art department.

An interest in nonfiction publishing, especially in the areas that The Experiment publishes, is preferred. Previous office experience is preferred but not mandatory. Curiosity and an inclination and ability to ask questions are essential, as is discretion.
Location: New York, NY
Application Due Date: We review applications on a rolling basis
Payment: We offer a competitive hourly rate, or eligible applicants may receive school credit
How To Apply For This Internship: Please email a cover letter, resume (as attachments, not in the body of the email), samples of work (either as a PDF or a link to portfolio), and at least one reference (with a phone number) to art@theexperimentpublishing.com. Your cover letter may be addressed to Beth Bugler and should briefly describe your skills and interests, what you hope to gain from the internship, the days of the week you're available to intern, and your preferred start and end dates.

Appropriate candidates will be contacted for an interview. Applications submitted without a cover letter/e-mail will not be considered. Due to high application volume, only appropriate candidates will be contacted. Please no calls.
