Title: Client Services Director, Children’s Distributed

Requirements: This position falls within Macmillan’s sales and marketing department for distributed client publishers and will handle all aspects of the relationship with 2-3 children’s book publishers distributed by Macmillan, and supervise the work of Client Account Managers on the children’s/teen titles from other distributed publishers. The Client Services Director is the publishers’ daily contact and advocate at Macmillan, providing the consistent flow of sales and marketing information to and from the publishers and the sales force. The Director is a full participant in the publishers’ strategic planning on the large scale in addition to the day to day and is expected to take a pro-active role in driving the publisher’s sales across all sales channels and managing all aspects of their business within our client publisher relationship. The Director will lead the Distribution department’s efforts in children’s book sales and marketing, and assist in outreach to potential new distribution clients.

Major Responsibilities:

Communication with account managers/reps & publishers:
• Day-to-day communication with publishers and sales reps regarding all sales, marketing, and operational issues.
• Timely distribution of sales rep feedback and seasonal call reports, providing interpretation and advice on follow-up
• Day-to-day communication with and supervision of Client Account Manager(s) handling children’s book publishers

Sales & Marketing:

• Seasonal deadline coordination and support: launch meeting, tip sheets, catalog copy, data entry, target titles, laydown goals, sales conference and post conference follow-up
• Regular marketing meetings with publishers and distribution department staff addressing sales and target updates, market or title opportunities and account feedback.
• Leveraging existing category expertise to advise publishers regarding trends and opportunities, and maintaining an ongoing knowledge of competitors’ titles and marketing efforts.
• Work with children’s sales team in trade, merchandise, special markets, international sales and eBook channels to recommend effective frontlist and backlist promotions and monitor co-op advertising plans, implementation, and results.
• BEA and regional bookseller show participation

Sales analysis and reporting:

• Key title point-of-sale reporting & analysis
• Title, marketplace and category data analysis and comparisons
• Annual business reviews with attention given to specific categories, trends and sales goals as well as a market overview and ongoing business updates
• New title print estimates and tracking
• Inventory management and analysis—initial printings, inventory allocation/ supply chain, reprint recommendations, and monitoring backlist for opportunities and promotions

Operational:

• Interface with Customer Service, Operations and the Warehouse, developing a strong knowledge of warehouse systems and procedures in order to advise publishers on how to execute special projects
• Supervise title data entry and flow of information to customers, up to and beyond on-sale date

Required Skills / Knowledge:

• Candidates must be detail-oriented, have excellent communication and organizational skills as well as problem-solving capabilities and the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work independently as well as collaboratively.
• Strong analytical and computer skills a must including Excel and PowerPoint.

Experience Needed:

• Candidates must have a minimum of 7-10 years book sales and/or marketing experience. Sales experience is strongly preferred. Interest and experience in children’s/YA publishing is a must.
