Title: Senior Editor, Workman Publishing
Description: Workman Publishing has a rare opening for an experienced acquisitions editor to join its editorial team. This person will acquire, edit, and publish top-notch, commercial nonfiction for the adult market—books and calendars that are excellent, needed, imaginative, unexpected, and visually exciting. The best candidates will have a track record for successful nonfiction, significant experience with the entire publishing process, and a vision for how to make a book stand out in today’s crowded marketplace. Good editing and writing skills and a knack for working closely with design are key to success in the job. Workman is an extremely collaborative environment that prioritizes creativity, ingenuity, intelligence, wit, craft, flexibility, congeniality, ambition, and entrepreneurial drive.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

*Publish 4-8 books a year—some acquired from agents, some the result of your own ideas and vision
*Edit 8-12 calendars a year—some from the Workman backlist, some new titles acquired by you
*Work closely with all departments—design, managing editorial, production, photo, publicity, marketing and sales—to ensure the highest quality and the greatest success
*Co-manage an editorial assistant

QUALIFICATIONS:

*A minimum of 7 years of experience in an editorial role (book publishing experience is a plus, but not necessarily essential)
*Strong writing, editing, and communication skills
*You know where smart people hang out, and you know how to find them
*A strong visual eye; you’re an innovator
*Resourceful, organized, creative self-starter; you would never wait for an idea to come to you

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

*Ability to meet deadlines while never settling for second-best
*A keen interest in book publishing—where the industry is now and where it’s going; a desire to figure out where untapped audiences reside and what they’re reading
*Proven experience with innovation and critical thinking
*A comfort with talking about ideas, and with selling them to others

Workman Publishing is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, so we strongly encourage veterans, people with disabilities, people of color and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.
Requirements:
Company: WORKMAN PUBLISHING
Location: New York, New York
How To Apply For This Job: Please send your resume and a cover letter, in which you answer the question, “Why do you want to work at Workman, as opposed to some other publisher?” to jobs@workman.com. We apologize in advance, but not all applicants will receive a response.
