Title: Fall 2019 Cartography Intern

Position: Cartography Department Intern

Reports to: Cartography Director

Term of Internship: 12 weeks, September 23-December 13

Minimum number of hours: 15-20 per week @ $15.59/hr

Job summary:
The Cartography Intern provides map production and production support to the cartography department. The intern works closely with the cartography manager, editors, and cartographers to prepare maps for layout using Adobe Illustrator and MAPublisher (GIS plug-in for Illustrator). While performing a select number of regular administrative tasks outlined below, the intern may also be asked to learn and perform a variety of functions related to map preparation and editing (i.e., generating map lists, data acquisition, checking and plotting sites on maps, editing maps for accuracy, building street indexes, etc.).

For the intern position, attention to detail is key, and a basic understanding of GIS data structure is very helpful.

Specific duties:
-Work closely with map editors to determine best base data and provide input during framing process.
-Using Adobe Illustrator and MAPublisher, build maps based on series specific templates.
-Work with map editors to review and correct edited maps.
-Export finished maps for book layout and/or website.
-Work with map editor and manager to review manuscript proofs for final book production.
