Description: | SUMMARY:
The Senior Editor, JIMMY Patterson Books, will oversee the editorial strategy and development of the imprint and will acquire and edit titles across a range of young age groups, notably picture books, middle-grade, and YA. This innovative imprint—whose mission is to publish books that turn kids into lifelong readers—is part of the James Patterson publishing program, and the Senior Editor will also edit and manage some of James Patterson’s children’s publications. The Senior Editor will be responsible for soliciting submissions, commissioning illustrators, overseeing interior and cover designs, and writing copy. The Senior Editor will work closely with the Publisher on list placement and positioning and work with marketing, publicity, and sales to achieve optimum sales and profit results. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Continue to develop the record-setting JIMMY Patterson list in conjunction with the Publisher--and further raise the imprint’s industry-best profile. Understand and espouse James Patterson’s publishing vision for the imprint—there are no kids who hate to read, there are only kids who haven’t yet found the right book! Review and critique manuscripts, pursue and publish books that will draw and hold the attention of children, and the wider world! Develop editorial talent and leadership ability of editorial team, supervising two direct staff. Work with an entrepreneurial spirit, pursuing ideas for book projects, as well as innovative ways to publish. Identify and develop relationships with agents, authors, and artists and acquire new projects for the imprint. Manage acquired books through the process, and in doing so, collaborate with authors on changes in style, content and format of books. Serve as in-house advocate for authors’ titles; work with publicity, design, sales and marketing to create a cohesive publishing effort for each title. Participate in industry events, trade shows, etc. |
Requirements: | KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Minimum of 8 years of publishing editorial experience with a focus on children’s/young adult book publishing, in increasing leadership roles. A demonstrated ability to acquire, edit, and develop children’s book projects that are profitable and appealing to consumers. Established relationships with children’s book agent and the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with authors, agents, and HBG staff Flexibility in working with the publisher’s strong, unique vision and direction In-depth knowledge of the retail landscape—trade, mass merchants, online. Excellent oral, written, presentation, and negotiation skills, strong initiative and judgement. Strong computer skills and project management skills and a demonstrated knowledge of the book design and production process. Proven ability to build supportive and constructive relationships within and outside of the organization—we aspire to be the tightest team in publishing, but we’re not uptight! Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time effectively while also ensuring accuracy of work through attention to detail. |
