Title: Editorial Assistant, STM Journals, Academic
Description: About the role:

We are looking for a highly motivated and collaborative Editorial Assistant to join our Science, Technology, and Medical (STM) Journals Editorial Team in the New York office. You’ll have the challenge of juggling multiple tasks for a pair of publishers and several editors (you won’t be alone: there are other editorial assistants in the broader STM-HSS team). By phone, email, and video communication you’ll also work with and learn from a larger Journals Editorial team based in Cambridge. Together we are a friendly and active team in the midst of much change in what it means to publish academic journals.

Key Responsibilities:

Administrative support

• Provide general administrative support to the STM journals department as required, including arranging and minuting meetings, circulating post, and arranging courier deliveries.
• Ensure efficient and timely distribution of information within STM journals department and where appropriate across the wider journals division (e.g. marketing, production, finance), as directed by your line manager.
• Keep information resources, including spreadsheets, databases and web pages, up to date as necessary.
• Keep up to date with the latest system developments and assist with testing of new systems.
• Liaise as required with internal colleagues and external society partners and editors.
• Take part in team-wide and cross department activities as needed.

Journal management support

• Support the day-to-day editorial management and development of journals as directed by line manager.
• Support team members in the preparation of publishing reports, accounts, journal development plans, proposals and journal tender documents.
• Conduct data analysis, market research and competitive analyses for a variety of subject areas, including the brain sciences, materials science, biophysics, Earth and environmental sciences, public health, and disaster medicine, amongst others.
• Assist the Editors with the transfer of newly signed journals onto the list and the launching of new titles.
• Be familiar with publishing ethics best practice, industry-wide standards, relevant discipline-specific standards, and publishing ethics guidelines and escalation procedures set by Cambridge University Press.

Engagement and networking

• Maintain awareness major initiatives/movements within the academic publishing industry.
• Promote a positive image of the organization with existing and potential partners and clients, and promote a positive image of the Journals Editorial team within the organization.
• May undertake national and international travel to attend conferences, present reports, and participate in proprietor and Editorial Board meetings.
Requirements: You will have an extremely strong relationship with our six behavioral values; collaborative, decisive, empowering, innovative, responsible, and responsive.

You should know a bit about what it means to publish journals. You won’t be editing the journals.
• Some office experience is desired. Skills desired:
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize
• Strong MS Office, Internet and research skills
• Good oral and written skills are a requirement; candidates should have the ability to liaise with many different people, including researchers, principal investigators, professors, colleagues in the books groups, marketers, production editors, sales people, and customer service, learn quickly and work both independently and as part of a team.
• Understanding of digital content development and financial acumen
• Strong writing, copyediting, proofreading skills would be a plus.
