Title: Senior Acquisitions Editor, Computer Science

ACQUISITIONS EDITOR, MIT Press, to acquire and develop books in computer science (CS). Responsibilities include commissioning CS textbook, trade books, and research monographs; determining the need for and commercial viability of proposed projects; evaluating unsolicited queries/proposals/manuscripts from authors/agents to identify prospective projects; arranging for projects to be independently peer reviewed by qualified experts and speaking with authors about revisions; consulting with academics at MIT and other universities to ensure the resulting publishing program reflects MIT’s standing among research universities in the field; traveling to campuses and academic conferences to meet with authors and represent the list; building the press’s networks in CS and positive relationships with researchers/instructors/reviewers/series editors, etc.; drafting and preparing external contracts, negotiating terms, and working with authors to ensure that contractual terms are met; reviewing the backlist for revision opportunities; coordinating with other departments to evaluate potential of and costs for prospective projects; preparing production estimates, P&Ls statements, and publishing plans; ensuring the efficient production of projects and promotion of books; presenting book projects to the editorial board and its marketing and sales staff; preparing assessments of the list, list profiles, and other materials; and performing other duties as needed.
Requirements: REQUIRED: B.A/B.S, preferably in computer science, mathematics, or related field; at least five years’ experience and strong track record in book acquisitions--including textbooks--in computer science or related field; excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong negotiation skills; knowledge of publishing contracts and terms and of the higher education community; ability to work with academic authors; and discretion and judgment with confidential information/issues.
