Originally established as a publisher of adult books, in 2001 Bloomsbury USA expanded with the creation of Bloomsbury Children’s USA, and later enlarged our trade reach with the acquisition of the adult and children’s divisions of Walker Books in 2004. To broaden the scope of our business, Bloomsbury stepped into the Academic and Professional market via the acquisitions of Continuum International Publishing Group in 2011 and Fairchild Books in 2012. Bloomsbury also created an increased presence in Special Interests Publishing with the acquisitions of Conway Publishing in 2014 and Osprey Publishing in 2015. Most recently, Bloomsbury launched its Digital Resources division in 2017, providing scholarly content in Humanities and Social Sciences as well as Bloomsbury’s award-winning Fashion Central and Drama Online.

Position Description

Reporting to the Executive Editor, the Associate Editor manages a list of approximately 10-15 editorial projects a year, which may include reprint paperback and board book editions of titles on the list, UK co-pubs, and select picture books, middle grade, and young adult fiction the Associate Editor may acquire. The Associate Editor also supports the Executive Editor with systems and editorial work, and selects projects as required by department.

Primary Responsibilities

• Develop agent and industry relationships.
• Read and evaluate submissions.
• Develop editorial vision.
• Prepare acquisitions proposals and champion projects.
• Run P&Ls, draft deal memos and offer emails.
• Negotiate contract terms.
• Oversee manuscripts and art through editorial, design, and production processes.
• Maintain author and illustrator relationships and communication.
• Draft copy and present titles in and out of house,
• Execute administrative and systems work for all of the above.
Requirements: • Preferred 2+ years of children’s editorial or related experience.
• Strong writing, editorial, and communication skills.
• Current knowledge of the markets for children’s and young adult books.
• Comfortable with the MS Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
• Strong time-management skills, ability to juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Location: Location: Please note that, due to COVID-19, this position will be working from home until further notice. Candidates must reside in NY, NJ, CT , or PA and be able to commute to Bloomsbury USA’s New York City office full-time when the office re-opens.
