Originally established as a publisher of adult books, in 2001 Bloomsbury USA expanded with the creation of Bloomsbury Children’s USA, and later enlarged our trade reach with the acquisition of the adult and children’s divisions of Walker Books in 2004. To broaden the scope of our business, Bloomsbury stepped into the Academic and Professional market via the acquisitions of Continuum International Publishing Group in 2011 and Fairchild Books in 2012. Bloomsbury also created an increased presence in Special Interests Publishing with the acquisitions of Conway Publishing in 2014 and Osprey Publishing in 2015. Most recently, Bloomsbury launched its Digital Resources division in 2017, providing scholarly content in Humanities and Social Sciences as well as Bloomsbury’s award-winning Fashion Central and Drama Online.

Position Description

Reporting to the Editorial Director, the Nonfiction Editor manages a list o original nonfiction projects, spanning all ages from activity/preschool to young adult. The Nonfiction Editor is responsible for all areas of book development, including acquiring, editing, liaising with design, production, managing editorial, marketing, and publicity, as well as developing strategy for the non-fiction list overall.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Acquire and edit a set number titles per year and work with Editorial Director to develop overall strategy for the nonfiction list
• Serve as primary contact for UK nonfiction colleagues; provide first recommendations on projects for co-publication and edit selected texts for US marketability.
• Work with adult editorial group to identify opportunities for select nonfiction publications across children and adult lists.
• Copywriting including jacket, catalog, tip sheets, design memos, and other marketing copy as required.
• Maintain production schedules and meet deadlines.
• Negotiate acquisitions with agents.
• Present projects at editorial, acquisitions, pre-launch, launch, and other sales meetings as necessary.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with authors, agents and industry organizations.
• Represent Bloomsbury at industry events and trade conferences throughout the year.
• Provide substantive feedback to other editors on nonfiction acquisitions.
• May also edit a select number of fiction titles per year, but focus will be on nonfiction list

Requirements: • Prefer demonstrated experience with and interest in nonfiction children’s titles
• Strong writing, editorial, and communication skills.
• Current knowledge of the markets for children’s and young adult books.
• Comfortable with the MS Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
• Strong time-management skills, ability to juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Candidates must reside in NY, NJ, CT , or PA and be able to commute to Bloomsbury USA’s New York City office full-time when the office re-opens.
