Title: Assistant Managing Editor-H&SS Journals

Duke University Press seeks to hire a Journals Assistant Managing Editor to oversee editorial processes for a set of journals primarily, but not exclusively, in the humanities and social sciences; to ensure the editorial quality of that set of journals, and balance this objective with schedules. The Assistant Managing Editor has solid editorial experience and excellent project management skills; demonstrates the ability to make sound decisions and to solve problems independently; and demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning.

I. Manage Editorial Processes for a Set of Journals
• Evaluate manuscripts that are submitted for publication; determine level of editing required to maintain high standards, and assess areas of manuscripts that require special focus.
• Oversee freelance copyeditors; provide instructions for improving comprehensibility of prose, correcting technical errors, and imposing style guide; review and critique work of freelance editors; for areas not covered in style guide and for resolving complicated editorial issues, review style manuals and independently choose best course of action.
• Copyedit manuscripts, improving comprehensibility of prose, correcting technical errors, and imposing style guide; for areas not covered in style guide and for resolving complicated editorial issues, review style manuals and independently choose best course of action.
• Correspond with authors, academic editors, and editorial office staff as needed; explain editorial approach and decisions on manuscripts; ask and respond to editorial office questions.
• Review corrections by authors, academic editors, and editorial office staff and create the master set of manuscripts and proofs; adjudicate differences, deciding which changes are preferable and negotiating with parties as needed.
• Oversee freelance proofreaders; provide instructions for proofreading of typeset material; review and critique work of freelance proofreaders.
• Proofread and perform quality check of proofs; proof covers for journal issues.
• Balance editorial standards with schedules, deciding when work on an editorial stage has achieved an acceptable level of quality and outstanding problems have been sufficiently resolved.
• Collaborate with Editing, Design and Production staff on resolving scheduling issues and presentation of complex textual and visual materials; provide guidance on layout of mathematical equations to improve readability and visual appeal.
• Implement and utilize new software tools to create workflow efficiencies, especially for digital publishing.
• Manage editorial logistics for multiple projects and priorities; develop and oversee procedures, methodologies, and internal schedules.
• Update and maintain style guides for assigned journals.

II. Additional Duties
• Proofread marketing copy and website content, as assigned.
• Work on professional development goals to improve skills; complete special projects to create efficiencies, solve problems, etc.
• Attend professional conferences and participate in meetings at the Press to improve understanding of scholarly publishing and the Press's operations, as well as to share information; make presentations and write blog postings as requested.
• Other related duties as assigned.
Requirements: Education/Training: Work requires communication, analytical, and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Experience: Work generally requires at least one year of editorial or production experience in a publishing or related setting. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
