Position Profile

This Assistant Editor entry-level role reports to two Senior Editors in the Adult Trade editorial department, assisting them in a wide range of tasks, including:

Primary Responsibilities

• Communicate with other departments, authors, and agents
• Write editorial materials, including but not limited to, tip sheets, catalog copy, and jacket copy, and copy to feed out to online retailers
• Read submissions and provide feedback, draft rejection letters
• Prepare acquisitions proposals
• Input data into our electronic databases, namely Biblio
• Provide editorial notes on manuscripts
• Shepherd UK co-pub titles through the US publication process and present these titles at pre-launch and launch meetings
• Mail out various forms of correspondence, including book mailings
• Prepare Travel and Expense reports and Focal Point invoices
• Create Word documents and Excel spreadsheets
• Commission and send advance payments
• Run P&Ls
• Research/update sales figures (Cognos, Decision Key, Royalty Share) for tip sheets
• Draft deal memos, review contracts, upload to Biblio
• Research and analyze trends and competition
• Review reprints and make necessary updates
• Prepare illustration suggestions and art logs for illustrated titles
• Prepare manuscripts for transmittal
Requirements: Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
• Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing
• Ability to organize, multi-task, and work under tight deadlines
• Strong attention to detail
• Critical reading skills/editorial eye
• Ability to take initiative
• Interest in working on adult fiction and non-fiction
• Strong understanding of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Basic understanding of how to operate electronic reading devices (Kindle, Nook, iPad)

Location: Location: Please note that, due to COVID-19, this position will be working from home until our planned return to the office date of October 18, 2021, in a hybrid arrangement with two days in the office (Tu, We) required, and up to five if the candidate chooses. Candidates must reside in NY, NJ, CT, or PA and be able to commute to Bloomsbury USA’s New York City office when the office re-opens.
