MAJOR TO JOB
Publishing is an apprenticeship industry, meaning that much of what a publishing professional needs to know will be learned on the job. Often, industry knowledge learned in one department is useful throughout the publishing house—allowing the opportunity to move between departments. But where to start? Put together with the help of several human resource experts, this guide to matching major with the appropriate publishing departments is a great way to determine your first steps.

HACHETTE BOOK GROUP |
| Description: |
Hachette Book Group is a leading trade publisher based in New York and a division of Hachette Livre, the second-largest publisher in the world. We are actively seeking strong candidates for our summer internship program in our New York office. This program targets college juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in the book publishing field. The program will begin early-June and extend through mid-August. Students are assigned positions within one of our many specialized departments (i.e., marketing, editorial, sales, sub-rights, production, design, publicity, audio and digital media) based on their interests, qualifications, and our business needs.
To enhance their work experience, interns will become familiar with all aspects of book publishing through educational sessions that feature speakers from all parts of the company. In addition, interns will have the opportunity to work in conjunction with seasoned professionals in specific fields handling day-to-day responsibilities, helping with special projects, and attending departmental meetings.
This is a paid internship. Students will be paid a competitive hourly rate. Students must also be able to make arrangements to live in the NYC metropolitan area over the summer. While we are able to provide some informal advice, we do not have an official housing program.
