Title: Assistant Editor
Description: Sterling Publishing Co., Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Barnes & Noble, is seeking an Assistant Editor to work within its Editorial department. We are seeking a creative, innovative, and passionate individual who is looking to make an impact within the department as well as the organization. We require excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

The Assistant Editor supports the editorial team on a wide range of non-fiction titles on a variety of subjects—including history, popular science, cooking, craft, DIY, and lifestyle books—and assumes daily editorial and administrative duties for the department.
Requirements: •Supports Editors with general editorial and design processes, including line-editing and fact-checking manuscripts; suggests ideas for development with authors and editors.
•Works closely with Editors to prepare Pub Board summaries, comp research, and other materials for Acquisitions meetings.
•Oversees the schedules of several books, traffics materials between in-house editorial personnel, freelance editorial personnel/packagers, and authors; creates and references P&L forecasts to ensure that projects stay on budget.
•Develops projects from start to finish, working out contract terms, development and line editing manuscripts, and determining schedules, titles, and subtitles, as well as creative direction; finds and contacts freelance personnel to assist with projects when necessary.
•Assists Editors with creating art logs, Americanizes texts of foreign co-editions, and proofreads layouts, jacket copy, and catalog copy.
•Processes invoices, author advances, work-for-hire advances, and cancellations.
•Acts as liaison between authors/agents and publisher, networking with various departments to provide information on royalties, advances, invoices, reprint status, pub status, reversion status, publicity, permissions, corrections, and other pressing concerns.

Position Requirements:

•Excellent communication and organizational skills, especially strong writing skills.
•Ability to work collaboratively with a small team in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
•Proficiency in Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Powerpoint.
•Some knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign preferred.


Position Qualifications:
•Minimum 2 - 3 years prior work experience within book publishing in an editorial capacity
•4 year college degree or equivalent work experience
