Title: Book Designer, Duke University Press
Description: Duke University Press is seeking a Book Designer to join the Editing, Design, and Production Group. The Book Designer is responsible for the design of text and covers for 30 to 40 projects per year, from visual concept to print and e-publication.

The Press is recognized internationally as a prominent publisher of books and journals, and publishes approximately 140 books annually and nearly 60 journals, as well as offering five electronic collections. Duke University Press publishes primarily in the humanities and social sciences and is known as a publisher willing to take chances with non-traditional and inter-disciplinary publications.

Job Responsibilities:
I. Competencies
A. Excellent skills required in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator; strong understanding of InDesign paragraph and character styles.
B. Strong and Versatile Portfolio demonstrating knowledge of Typography, Design, writing thorough Composition Specifications, and logical thinking; good technical knowledge of Typesetting, Pre-press including Halftone Sizing and Adjustment, and black-and-white and color printing.
C. Proven project management ability; self-directed and deadline-oriented.
D. Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly.
E. Strong verbal and written skills.

II. Design
A. Evaluate mss for structure and presentation in print and electronic formats; review cast offs and ms files.
B. Design interior text, write specs, and supply sample layouts to compositors as needed; review page proofs.
C. Responsible for cover, case and jacket designs for assigned titles.
D. Work internally with editorial and marketing staff on cover ideas; and externally with rights-holders and authors for images and approvals.
E. Create digital mechanicals for press according to printer templates; work with production and print vendors on print specs, special finishes, trims, paper, and schedule.

III. Production
A. Manage multiple and overlapping projects.
B. Monitor, meet, and accelerate schedules as needed for multiple book projects simultaneously.
C. Work with EDP production specs and suppliers for optimally prepared files for print and e-publication.
Requirements: Education:
• Prefer at least 1 year of Book Design Experience
• Prefer B.A. or B.F.A. in graphic design, or 2 years related experience
• Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Training:
• Book Design Experience; InDesign and Photoshop proficiency required
• Prior work with FTP clients and font management software
• Excellent experience with and knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite; basic HTML/CSS knowledge preferred
• Mac and PC proficiency a major plus

Experience:
• Typography or Publication Design of Books and/or Magazines
• Work generally requires one year of graphic arts or related experience to acquire knowledge or skill in the methods and techniques used in complex design and layout of books, as well as an ability to analyze and interpret art needs of manuscripts and other publications.
• OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
