Title: Digital Director at The Paris Review
Description: The Paris Review, the nation’s preeminent literary quarterly, seeks a digital director to manage website operations, develop new media features for the organization, and lead digital marketing. Since its founding in 1953, the magazine has featured the best new literature; the organization has grown to include a robust online presence, featuring archival and new native content (including the award-winning Paris Review Daily), books, a podcast, and documentary film. The Paris Review’s website has grown exponentially in the last few years and has become its primary source of business (subscriptions, merchandise, books). Continued growth of the Review’s digital footprint is an institutional priority, and we are looking for a digital director to help create and drive our digital growth strategy by employing best practices, brand awareness, and ingenuity across the Review’s entire digital platform.

Primary Responsibilities

● Responsible for www.theparisreview.org

○ Manages and improves the digital archive of magazine, including converting the print quarterly into its digital formats
○ Maintains, updates, and monitors WordPress account, ensuring that the Daily implements the best online publishing practices and strategies
○ Manages subscriber database and subscription order pages with a third-party subscription fulfillment house
○ Maintains and updates The Paris Review’s website—including the home page, side rails, subscription pages, Shopify store, and ad distribution platform; manages digital image assets
○ Manages web hosting and certificate accounts
○ Acts as the Review’s IT department; maintains data management and communications accounts; troubleshoots web and computing issues as they arise with the assistance of data and developer consultants

● Digital Initiatives

○ Acts as primary liaison to web developers, project-manages website updates and other digital initiatives
○ Researches market trends and best web practices to be incorporated into online content
○ Works closely with editor to develop new media content (video and audio); assists with conception, production, and placement across digital platforms
○ Works with Daily editors and social media manager to develop and implement strategy for cross-platform content initiatives

● Data Management

○ Manages the Review’s digital data gathering, ensuring digital team implements best practices for tracking marketing campaigns (merchandise and subscriptions)
○ Distills marketing, traffic, and digital data into actionable and readable reports for the editor, publishing director, board of directors, and other Paris Review staff
○ Monitors changes in performance metrics and responds as necessary

● Marketing and Promotions

○ Leads the digital marketing function in order to drive sustainable, profitable incremental revenue growth while supporting and driving brand engagement
○ Coordinates online marketing, promotional, and partnership efforts with editor, publishing director, and social media manager
○ Creates promotional materials, house ads, and campaign creatives as needed
○ Explores emerging digital marketing technologies to drive acquisition, retention,and engagement




Requirements: Desired Skills and Qualifications:

● 4+ years of professional experience in a literary or arts organization and/or e-commerce environment, with experience in project management, managing online databases/extensive digital content, working with and improving a proprietary CMS, and driving audience engagement in new media/cross media
● Passion for literature
● Understanding of direct response, digital marketing, e-commerce, and lead generation as well as online business models and KPIs (key performance indicators)
● Willingness and ability to be hands-on in executing programs, including getting deep into data analysis while balancing multiple priorities and projects
● External orientation and ability to take best practices and apply them to our organization
● Ability to turn empirical data into insightful, strategic decisions and actionable plans
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills
● Analytics: extensive knowledge of Google Analytics and Google Ad Manager
● Marketing: thorough understanding of and experience managing the following: SEM, SEO, PLAs, programmatic/display, paid social, email (Mailchimp), and audience targeting
● Web development: extensive knowledge of WordPress and relevant e-commerce platforms, and experience with programming languages and tools (i.e., HTML/CSS, PHP, UTM)
● General: extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, etc).
