Title: Graphic Designer, Children's Books
Description: The Graphic Designer will conceive and implement cover and interior page design for Magination Press as well as layout covers and interior pages and serve as print-buyer and printer liaison on new books and reprints. The Graphic Designer will work closely Magination Press editorial team to execute effective book and cover designs.

This position requires someone with professional experience designing children’s and teen books and covers, an excellent understanding of interior design and typography, demonstrated creativity and artistic sensibility, and ability to effectively package and copy fit text and illustrations. Must be able to generate ideas, turn words into visuals, and think editorially and narratively when designing books.

Education and Experience:
•BA/BS in design, fine arts or similar field required or equivalent combination of experienced and education. Proven graphic design experience with a strong portfolio of professionally prepared and published designs cover and interior designs, editorial illustrations, or other graphics
•Thorough knowledge of book print design ideally with 2-3 years of work in a professional setting and with design software (such as Adobe Creative Suite -- InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Photoshop) as well as Microsoft Office and Powerpoint
•Exceptional typographic and layout skills
•Strong eye for aesthetics and details; concern for quality throughout design and production process; ability to create unique aesthetic across a seasonal list
•Excellent communication skills and ability to function collaboratively in a team and act quickly and responsively in a fast-paced environment
•Ability to work efficiently and to meet deadlines; ability to juggle multiple projects often with overlapping deadlines
•Familiarity with effective responsive design strategies for electronic products, social media platforms, and digital environments a plus
•Commitment to APA’s mission


Computer/Software Skills:
•In-depth understanding of Adobe Creative Suite including inDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
•Understanding of Microsoft Office programs and Powerpoint

Responsibilities:
•The Graphic Designer will conceive and implement cover and interior page designs for Magination Press books. The Graphic Designer will layout covers, dust jackets, and interior pages and handle updates and corrections to pages or covers at reprint as needed. The Graphic Designer will be consulted on illustrators.
•The Graphic Designer will serve as the print buyer as well as prepare the final printer files, upload files, and coordinate blueline corrections of new books and reprints.
•The Graphic Designer will create all the necessary files for editorial archives and Marketing and Sales team needs (e.g., marketing covers, online catalogs, subrights PDFs).
•The Graphic Designer will work closely and collaboratively with Magination Press editorial team

•The Graphic Designer will typeset revisions and corrections to text and design as editor proofs interior pages and covers and closely works with the editor to produce error-free books.

•Other Duties as Assigned
