| Title: | Marketing and Publicity Manager |
| Description: | Heyday is an independent, nonprofit publisher. Since our founding in 1974, we have promoted awareness and celebration of California’s many cultures, landscapes, and boundary-breaking ideas. With our books we seek to honor nature, fight injustice, celebrate California Native cultural renewal, and explore and make history.
The marketing and publicity manager is responsible for overseeing the promotion of all Heyday books—approximately twenty per year—and ensuring Heyday’s visibility. Duties Marketing: • Write marketing copy, including back cover and press release copy, and solicit blurbs • Manage marketing research and develop plans for individual titles o Meet and plan with authors, freelance publicists, and publishing partners o Act as department liaison for authors • Lead the creation of Heyday’s book catalog twice per year o Write catalog copy and help create catalog concept o Maintain catalog backlist o Work with Heyday’s design team to ensure on-time delivery • Research and submit award nominations for books • Track course adoptions of Heyday books, and mail desk copies to instructors • Manage creation of marketing materials, including bookmarks, fliers, postcards, and signs • Provide feedback to acquisitions editors about marketability of projects under consideration Communications: • Administer website, and manage e-newsletter content and design o Work with outside web design team to restructure and redesign Heyday website o Create monthly newsletters geared to promote direct sales from Heyday website • Manage social media and online promotion, including on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Goodreads Publicity: • Oversee media relations, mailings of books for review, and follow-up with media contacts • Arrange interviews for authors • Connect authors with events managers at bookstores and other venues • Attend conferences and events as needed, occasionally on evenings and weekends • Collect and archive reviews and coverage • Follow industry trends and media coverage of publishing industry Intended start date: Immediately. Heyday benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, and a savings 401K plan. Top salary, depending on skill set and experience, is $60,000. |
| Requirements: | The marketing and publicity manager is expected to demonstrate strong writing and communication skills, represent Heyday’s long-respected reputation while bringing to bear a nuanced understanding of pertinent cultural trends, and prioritize time effectively according to the needs of the company. A love of writing and books is a must, and technological savvy is a plus. Prior marketing experience is also a plus, whether in publishing or in another industry. This full-time position will report to Heyday’s sales manager. |
