Title: Intern
Description: Our office in Brooklyn has three 16-week internship programs each year: Spring (January to April), Summer (May to August), and Fall (September to December). Each internship is full-time and paid at a rate of $16.14 per hour for 40 hours per week—Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm—which is $1,291.20 per biweekly pay period (the MIT Living Wage for Brooklyn). Exact start and finish dates will be arranged during the hiring process, and can be shifted a little to accommodate academic or other commitments. Interns will be expected to learn through practical hands-on experience and will be appraised throughout their time with Verso.

Verso’s internships are intended to act as an introduction to book publishing, as well as to a wider political and intellectual project. Interns will work with both the publicity and marketing department and the editorial and production department; all placements will involve work across the full range of Verso’s activities—including office administration tasks and helping to staff events. We will aim to ensure that each intern works closely with a few books through a complete production or publicity cycle. A good knowledge of Verso’s list, and a curious and critical engagement with current affairs, will be an advantage.

Please apply for Spring internships by Oct 16, and we will confirm any placements by Nov 1. Apply for Summer internships by Feb 8, and we will confirm placements by Feb 22. Apply for Fall internships by May 1, and we will confirm by May 20. Applicants will need to be available for one interview in Brooklyn, in between the application and confirmation dates, and to be legally entitled to work in the US. All applications need to include both a résumé and cover letter, with the letter offering specific reasons why the applicant would be well suited to working on Verso’s list, and expressing any preference for editorial or publicity. We will acknowledge receipt of all complete applications received by the deadline, and then notify shortlisted candidates with the date and time of their interview.
Requirements: Some office experience a plus. Knowledge of social media best practices a plus. An interest in left politics and social justice issues a major plus.
