Title: Journal Editorial Assistant, 'PRESENCE'

JOURNAL EDITORIAL ASSISTANT, PRESENCE: VIRTUAL AND AUGMENT REALITY, MIT Press (part-time, 15 hrs/wk.), to coordinate all aspects of the editorial operation and peer review process and some pre-press arrangements for a journal--PRESENCE--devoted to research into teleoperation and virtual environments. Responsibilities will include receiving and acknowledging manuscripts, checking for conformity to submission guidelines, and seeking revision where needed; obtaining assignments of associate editor from editors-in-chief; providing manuscripts and ancillary material to associate editors; setting deadlines for associate editors and reviewers and providing reminders; collecting reviews, reformatting, and editing for language issues; obtaining editor-in-chief decisions; distributing decisions along with reviews to authors; setting deadlines and providing guidelines for submitting revised manuscripts; distributing acceptance documents to authors; working with authors to ensure manuscripts meet style guide requirements; assisting with developing and disseminating journal editorial policies; providing editors-in-chief with periodic progress reports, performance statistics, and recommendations related to associate editors' workload, responsiveness, and task completion; managing email correspondence; formatting and submitting page-charge invoices to authors; performing periodic backup and archiving for editorial office digital files and email; requesting updates to journal's webpage; updating complementary subscribers’ list; communicating with production coordinator concerning status and flow of expected final-version manuscripts; providing same-date notifications of manuscript acceptance; and transferring manuscript materials via ftp.

Requirements: High school diploma or its equivalent; at least four years’ administrative/editorial experience, including one year with scholarly publishing submission/peer review platforms or journal editorial workflows in general; high-level verbal and written communication skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office programs; and discretion and judgment with confidential information/issues. PREFERRED: bachelor’s degree in a related field, familiarity with LaTeX, and background in virtual and augmented reality. Job #18667-5
