Title: Junior Assistant to a Literary Agent
Description: President of a boutique literary agency in Greenwich Village seeks a second full-time assistant. This person will provide administrative support, correspond with bestselling clients and publishers, read and evaluate queries, prepare submissions, track contracts, maintain records, support the senior assistant, and learn about domestic and foreign rights negotiations. While the agency is working remotely for the time being, this person must be New York-based once we resume working from our offices.

The ideal candidate is energetic, hardworking, and eager to join/grow their career in the publishing industry. Applicant should be able to read manuscripts quickly and thoughtfully, and provide insightful verbal and written feedback; avid readers with editorial experience are encouraged to apply. We are looking for the right fit for our team, someone who is enthusiastic, responsible, and motivated to grow and gain new skills in a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage agent’s calendar, phone calls, and book fair itineraries;
Correspond with clients, publishers, and co-agents;
Read queries, evaluate manuscripts and provide feedback, and write reader’s reports;
Track contracts through their various stages;
Analyze financial records and sales reports;
Maintain several Excel spreadsheets and digital records;
Track clients’ domestic and international book sales, reviews, and publicity;
Create and update authors’ marketing/promotional materials;
Handle mailings, digitization of files, and general administrative upkeep;
Support the senior assistant with foreign rights and more, as needed;
Contribute to agency’s social media accounts.
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English or Creative Writing;
Internships in publishing and/or 6 months to 1 year of office experience
Interest in foreign rights and international sales;
Interest in agenting;
Computer and Internet savvy, proficiency in Microsoft software and social media;
Exquisite attention to detail and organization;
Creative problem-solving skills and initiative;
Discretion, tact, and professionalism.
