Title: Editorial Assistant, The Experiment
Description: The Experiment seeks an Editorial Assistant to assist two Executive Editors. The assistant will provide administrative and editorial support and will help evaluate and edit practical and narrative nonfiction books, especially in the areas of self-help, popular science, nature, psychology, parenting, and memoir.

Specific responsibilities include:
-Reading and evaluating manuscript submissions, writing reader reports, researching comparative titles, and drafting rejection letters.
-Writing and editing internal sales materials, online copy, and cover copy.
-Communicating with authors, agents, and internal departments, including Production, Marketing and Publicity, Contracts, and Art.
-Preparing manuscripts for production, anticipating project deadlines, and tracking manuscripts throughout the editorial process.

This position is an opportunity to make a major impact at a successful, enterprising, 14-year-old independently owned publishing company, focused on publishing editorially distinguished books that speak to broad audiences, and warrant long shelf lives, across all of our subjects.

We seek someone who is highly detail-oriented, an unceasing initiative-taker and problem solver, extremely curious and attuned to current trends, is happy to work both independently and collaboratively, and who has superlative written and verbal communication skills. We strongly encourage BIPOC and other self-identifying members of groups underrepresented in publishing to apply.
Requirements: Although prior office experience in book publishing is a plus, we do not require it, and we welcome applicants from all academic backgrounds to apply. (One of our most esteemed colleagues was a physics major, for example.) However, excellent written and verbal communication skills are imperative. A key demand of this position is to be able to write clearly and free of grammatical error. Excellent attention to detail, organization, as well as the ability to juggle multiple assignments with deadlines both short- and long-term are all highly valued, as are the ability to work independently as well as with others and to take initiative. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook required. Reading knowledge of languages other than English (especially German, Dutch, &/or French) is not required but is a plus. The best applicants will demonstrate a wide-ranging interest in the editorial areas we publish in.

This position is based in NYC. All NYC-based employees work two days per week in our office, although we pause that requirement when NYC's COVID risk status is high or very high. NYC-based employees may elect to work in the office up to all five weekdays (and numerous employees do so elect).

We are a collegial, creative, book-loving, and hard-working crew, with offices near Gramercy Park in Manhattan. Full-time employees are eligible for our benefits program. These include (but are not limited to) medical/prescription drug insurance, dental, vision, health care/dependent care Flexible Spending Account, matching pretax and Roth 401(k), commuter benefits, corporate CitiBike membership, bonus, and profit-sharing.

We believe that including and representing diverse voices in all aspects of our business will benefit us all. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status.
Company: THE EXPERIMENT
Location: New York, NY
How To Apply For This Job: Please send a resume, cover letter advising why you believe you're the right person for the job, and references to EAjob@theexperimentpublishing.com; please include "Editorial Assistant" in the subject line. No phone calls please. We apologize in advance, but not all applicants will receive a response. Thank you very much for your interest.
