Title: Editorial Assistant
Description: Candlewick Press, a leading publisher of books for children, located in Somerville, MA, seeks an Editorial Assistant. The editorial assistant will provide variable levels of administrative and editorial support to an Executive Editorial Director and two off-site Senior Executive Editors (one of whom works part-time)

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

● Complete various acquisition forms and enter data in company’s contract and title management database.
● Attend book development meetings between editor and designer and/or other departments, and take minutes as requested.
● Keep careful track of Supervisors’ books’ schedules and deadlines by attending weekly publishing/production meetings and reviewing title management database.
● Prepare manuscripts for transmittal into copyediting and/or graphic production.
● Review various stages of a circulating book on behalf of Supervisors.
● Draft jacket copy for a variety of genres and age ranges.
● Read and prepare reader’s reports for submissions and active projects.
● Maintain a spreadsheet tracking manuscript submissions for Supervisors.
● Attend tri-yearly sales conferences and present titles on behalf of Supervisors as needed.
● Attend bi-yearly foreign rights VCs and present titles on behalf of Supervisors as needed.
● Liaise with authors and agents, for example by sending review/award notifications, verifying contact information, or sharing updates on ongoing projects.
● Prepare packages for mailing to authors, agents, and others.
● Act as point of contact for part-time Supervisor two days a week.
● Assist Supervisor in documenting/updating departmental processes.

Perform other tasks as needed
Requirements: Candidates must be extremely organized, attentive to detail, and able to multitask and prioritize. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and possess a strong interest in children’s trade publishing; a motivation to learn; exceptional English language skills (proofreading, spelling, grammar); and strong communication and relationship-building skills. The successful candidate will be expected to become proficient in Adobe Acrobat, Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and other common computer programs.
