Description: | Jessica Kingsley Publishers are looking to hire a talented and ambitious Commissioning Editor to expand our LGBTQIA+ publishing in the North American market. Reporting to the Editorial Director, the Commissioning Editor will help grow our market-leading publishing on gender identity and sexuality.
With offices in Philadelphia and London, JKP is an award-winning, global publisher with a strong social justice agenda. We believe in empowering individuals through information and knowledge and aim to drive social change by celebrating diversity and equality for all. This role is to be positioned in our Philadelphia office, or another appropriate US-based Hachette office (once they fully reopen) with a hybrid office/work from home schedule. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly approach potential authors with original publishing ideas Establish and maintain relationships with North American authors Actively solicit, acquire, evaluate, and develop proposals and book concepts Negotiate contracts with authors and agents Champion books through the publishing process Maintain an effective relationship with editorial, marketing, sales production, and other departments Develop and maintain market awareness in order to identify publishing opportunities Oversee the preparation of marketing, jacket, and catalog copy; and review marketing and publicity materials. |
Requirements: | KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Ability to commission and develop a commercially focused and profitable list of US and Canadian authors, working across a range of formats, including self-help, memoir, practical guides, children’s books, books for teens, graphic non-fiction as well as online resources. Passionate about LGBTQIA+ rights and have strong connections to the community and LGBTQIA+ authors and talent. Brimming with ideas for original and exciting resources that will push our publishing in new directions and make a difference to people’s lives. Desire to work in an environment that balances significant autonomy with teamwork, building a close working relationship with the JKP teams in Philadelphia and London. Previous editorial experience is not essential, but you will be creative, dynamic and ideas driven, with a proven ability to build and maintain relationships.
