Title: Acquisitions Editor-at-Large
Description: Diversion Books is seeking an Acquisitions Editor-at-Large to acquire—with a particular focus on books by, about, and for women—select books in the candidate’s favorite nonfiction categories, as well as the Diversion core categories of American history, current events and issues, music and pop culture, true crime, science, business and leadership, self-development, and DEI. This is an opportunity to acquire books for a growing print program with new media arms in podcasts.

The Acquisition Editor-at-Large’s primary responsibility is the growth and diversification of Diversion’s book publishing program. Reporting to the Editor in Chief, the position will work closely with the EIC and Publisher to network with literary agents and authors, field book proposals, discuss proposals at editorial board meetings, and acquire agreed-upon book properties for upcoming publishing seasons.

Experience and knowledge of the Publishing industry is essential, as is a passion for Diversion’s categories and women’s voices.

The Acquisitions Editor-at-Large role is a part-time monthly contract role, in which the editor acquires exclusively for Diversion books, and has the potential to grow into a full-time position.
Requirements: RESPONSIBILITIES (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO):

• Actively solicit, acquire, and evaluate nonfiction with critical and high sales potential, and identify categories to explore for growth potential

• Acquire 10 or more books per year

• Build and nurture strong relationships with a network of agent, author, and wider cultural contacts

• Present potential projects at editorial board meetings

• Draft P&Ls for each approved title and negotiate deals in coordination with Editor in Chief and Publisher

• Draft post-acquisition sales tip sheets for each title acquired

• Draft initial cover copy for each title acquired

• On select titles and under separate agreements, work with writers to develop and finalize manuscripts, from substantive structural feedback to line edits

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in book acquisitions for the general nonfiction trade market

• Established network of literary agents and authors

• Experience and knowledge of Diversion’s core categories and women’s interest

• Proactive approach to sharing information with colleagues and cross-functional teams

• Ability to come to the New York City office for touch-base meetings preferred
