Title: Assistant Travel Editor, Avalon Travel
Description: Avalon Travel, an imprint of Perseus Books, a Hachette Book Group company, is seeking an Assistant Editor to support the Avalon Rick Steves editorial team. Rick Steves is America’s leading authority on European travel and his guidebooks are the best-selling travel guides to Europe in the United States.

This is an entry-level position, but one with opportunities for learning and growth. The Assistant Editor will work collaboratively on 35 or more travel guidebook projects per year, contributing to many editorial and production stages. Please note that this is not a writing job and will not lead to any writing assignments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintain collaborative and cordial relationships with the Rick Steves’ Europe editorial team based in Edmonds, WA, and with all Avalon Travel colleagues across various departments
Manage freelancers
Review all stages of manuscripts and page proofs, and input editorial corrections as necessary
Prepare materials for and traffic editorial projects through all stages of the editorial process
Coordinate pages between the editorial, production, and cartography departments
Meet tight deadlines to produce high-quality books
Enter title data into proprietary database systems and maintain data throughout the publishing process
Requirements: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

The successful candidate will have:

A college degree
1-2 years of experience in publishing or media
A passion for travel and publishing
An ability to independently manage tasks for multiple projects under tight deadlines
A flexible and positive attitude
A commitment to collaboration and teamwork, while also being self-directed and able to work independently
Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills
Strong copyediting and proofreading skills
A thorough knowledge of accepted rules of grammar, spelling, and style
Proficiency in Microsoft Office on both Mac and Windows platforms
A willingness to learn new software programs and processes
