Description: | SUMMARY:
PublicAffairs, a nonfiction imprint of the Perseus Books division of Hachette Book Group, is looking for a dynamic, creative and collaborative Associate Editor for its Business and Economics Books program. The Associate Editor will be responsible for editing and supervising manuscripts acquired by other editors, and will also assist an executive editor. This is also an opportunity for the right candidate to create and build their own list, and they will be be expected to acquire 4-6 books per year. We welcome candidates who bring diverse areas of experience and expertise to the imprint, and a commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment. We have a preference for the job to be located in the New York office on a hybrid schedule. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Build and maintain relationships with authors and agents to acquire and develop new projects. Acquire 4-6 books annually Read and report on manuscripts, proposals and books submitted for publication. Edit manuscripts and manage books through the copyediting, design, and production process. Serve as advocate for authors’ titles; work with contracts, publicity, design, sales, and marketing to create a cohesive publishing effort. Prepare materials such as acquisition memos, profit and loss statements, title fact sheets, catalog and jacket copy, etc. |
Requirements: | KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
3+ years’ editorial experience. Broad knowledge of the business books market and the other publishing categories in which PublicAffairs publishes. Contacts among authors, writers, academics, journalists, literary agents, or demonstrated ability to develop such contacts. Some awareness of business media, and an interest in pursuing projects outside the traditional agent acquisition model. Ability to work cross-functionally with other groups, companies, and organizations on shared long-term projects. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
