Title: | Managing Editor |
Description: | This position’s duties encompass editorial, production, information technology, accounting, and customer service along with management of the people and processes required to produce one or more of the society’s publications (GSA Bulletin, Geology, Geosphere, books).
• Manages editorial and most production functions associated with print and online publication of one or more of the organization’s publications, including both pre- and post-acceptance tasks. • Designs and monitors workflow and ensures timely print and online publication of peer-reviewed research papers. This includes the ongoing assessment of current business practices associated with editorial and production techniques and implementation as needed and desired. • Management, support, and high-level usage of online manuscript submission and peer-review system, including content technical checks, processing submissions, troubleshooting system, and providing technical support for authors, editors, and reviewers; • Collaborates with science editors to ensure timely publication of high-quality papers. • Designs format and determines layout (i.e., pagination) of publication. • XML codes metadata; packages and publishes online content; resupplies online files as needed; identifies and resolves content tagging issues or works with vendors to resolve these. • Tracks invoicing and revenue and determines budget needs for one of the publications with the assistance of the publications director. • Provides editorial services to meet the needs of the GSA headquarters staff and science editors. • Builds and maintains relationships with authors, staff, reviewers, science editors, associate editors, editorial board members, and vendors. • Completes administrative duties, such as archiving, maintaining drives, tracking and updating publication data (ranging from XML files to simple statistics), and preparing reports. • Performs other tasks as required by the editorial manager or publications director. • May act on behalf of the editorial manager in their absence. • Oversees work of exempt, non-exempt, and contract employees (includes editorial assistant, production staff, and contract copy editors, proofreaders, and typesetters). Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training, and performance management. Assigns projects and goals and is responsible for group results. • Other duties as assigned. |
Requirements: | • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in English, communications, or science (preferably geology).
• Three to five years (minimum) as an editor of scholarly publications, with a clear record of progressively increasing responsibility or an equivalent skill level. • Highly proficient in the use of personal computers and applications, including database and spreadsheet management, Microsoft Office suite, Adobe applications, Google Workspace (or similar), file sharing software, virtual meeting software, and online manuscript tracking systems. Familiarity with markup languages (e.g. HTML, XML) preferred. Comfortable with learning new software and systems. • Demonstrated ability or clear potential to manage complex programs. • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including superior copyediting skills, and strong ability to communicate clearly and work amicably with others • Excellent customer service skills. Knowledge of and interest in science and scholarly publishing, including scholarly publishing in the earth sciences. • Excellent command of English required, and a good general knowledge of scientific terminology preferred. • Experience following a house style guide and the Chicago Manual of Style. • Adept at multitasking (ability to prioritize and handle several projects at once). • Strong organization skills, attention to detail, and comfort with spreadsheets. • Knowledge of manuscript submission and peer review systems (e.g., eJournal Press or Editorial Manager, etc.), eXtyles, and the print/electronic publication process preferred. |
