Title: Book Editor
Description: ABOUT QUANTA BOOKS
Quanta Books is a new imprint from the creators of Quanta Magazine, an award-winning, editorially independent online publication launched by the Simons Foundation to enhance public understanding of science. Like Quanta Magazine, which was awarded a 2022 Pulitzer Prize and a 2020 National Magazine Award, our books division will focus on developments in mathematics, theoretical physics, theoretical computer science and the basic life sciences, with a commitment to narrative excellence, scientific accuracy, and public service.

POSITION SUMMARY
Quanta Books seeks an accomplished book editor to acquire and edit popular science and math books. This editor will work closely with the editor in chief to sign and support talented authors in conceptualizing and developing nonfiction manuscripts about the biggest ideas and most captivating stories in the worlds of physics, mathematics, computer science and biology. The successful candidate will have an extensive editorial background in trade books and will collaborate on other aspects of the design and production process as needed.

The ideal candidate will be a discerning science book editor with impeccable editorial judgment, who is a diehard advocate for the highest standards in book publishing and scientific accuracy.

This is a full-time position based in our offices in New York City.
Requirements: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
• Acquire and edit up to five book manuscripts per year. (Our low-volume imprint prizes quality, impact, craft and accuracy over quantity.)
• Review and edit book proposals and participate in regular editorial meetings to discuss projects in development.
• Conduct exploratory meetings with potential authors.
• Interface with production, design, publicity and marketing staff of our publishing partner.
• Co-manage an editorial assistant.
• Manage freelance copy-editing and fact-checking.
• Attend industry events and contribute to publicity efforts as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• At least five years of experience acquiring and editing popular (trade) science books at a major publishing house.
• Must be passionate and deeply curious about basic science and mathematics.
• Must be well-versed in all aspects of the book publishing process.
• Must demonstrate command of the highest standards of written English.
• Must be detail-oriented, organized and able to consistently meet deadlines.
• Must be an excellent communicator and team player who thrives in a collaborative setting.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
• The full-time annual compensation range for the Editor level is $90,000 to $120,000, depending on experience.
• The full-time annual compensation range for the Senior Editor level is $120,000 to $150,000, depending on experience.
