Title: Publicist, Workman Publishing
Description: Workman Publishing (WP) a division of Hachette Book Group, is a leading publisher of award-winning lifestyle and nonfiction books, children’s books, gift books, fiction, stationery, puzzles, and the bestselling calendar line in the business. WP includes Workman, Workman Kids, Workman Calendars, Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, Algonquin Young Readers (AYR), Artisan, Storey Publishing, and Timber Press. WP is part of Hachette Book Group.

Workman Publishing is seeking a dynamic, motivated and talented Publicist to join the Publicity team supporting the Workman Kids and Algonquin Young Readers imprints. The candidate will work across a diverse list of titles and national brands of books and calendars, with a focus on picture books, middle grade and YA releases.

This role is expected to execute all aspects of innovative publicity campaigns, including writing press materials, pitching media, planning author tours/events, and communicating regularly with authors and media to secure on and off-the-book page coverage as well as online media. Other duties will include strengthening and developing media contacts, maintaining author relationships, co-managing the department internship program, and working closely with in-house departments including editorial, marketing and sales teams.

This position reports to the Director of Publicity and resides within the WP Publicity and Marketing department.

This is a hybrid role that works from home three days a week and commutes to Hachette’s NY office twice a week, and additionally as-needed for author and industry events.

Requirements: ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Independently own and manage title-specific publicity campaigns for picture books, middle grade and young adult novels, as well as license/brand programs
Write press materials, create media lists, and pitch/secure media coverage (broadcast, print, online), including cover reveals & book announcements, feature interviews, reviews & round-ups in national and local media
Plan and execute author appearances including multi-city book tours, virtual appearances, local appearances, school visits, and special events, both in-store and offsite
Research and develop relationships with media outlets
Arrange travel for authors/illustrators and create tour schedules
Travel selectively with authors for local appearances and festivals/conferences
Present campaign plans and results in internal sales meetings
Orchestrate both paid and organic social media influencer campaigns
Participate in relevant NYC-based industry events and conferences, where appropriate
Cultivate ongoing working relationships with key media outlets, and bookstore representative
Collaborate with the marketing and digital departments to create a cohesive promotional campaign
Actively participate in internal publicity, strategy, and author proposal meetings
Responsible for proposing and submitting titles for an extensive array of awards
Responsible for managing the department holiday gift guide outreach

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

College degree, or equivalent work experience
2-3+ years of prior children’s publicity/publishing or public relations experience
Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
Established network of broadcast, print and digital contacts
Must have good time management skills, be organized and detail-oriented, and capable of multi-tasking
Positive attitude, an eagerness to learn, and a willingness to ask questions
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
A strong focus on details and deadlines
Excitement for participating in and contributing to a fun, vibrant work environment with a great company culture
Proficient in MS Word and Excel. Knowledge of Cision, Muckrack a plus

The compensation range for this position is $55,000 to $65,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
