Description: | W. W. Norton & Company, Inc. is seeking an Editorial Assistant to join its College Editorial Department. This is a full-time, entry-level position based out of Norton’s headquarters in NYC. The Editorial Assistant will support editorial work in the literature discipline, working on Norton Anthologies, Norton Critical Editions, and the Norton Library. The position does not require subject matter expertise, but it does require willingness to develop a deeper understanding of the higher education landscape in the humanities.
Essential Job Responsibilities Contributing to the overall publishing strategy of Norton Anthologies as well as individual titles in the Norton Critical Editions and Norton Library series and the literature discipline as a whole, including: Management of books in all stages of production, including but not limited to preparing manuscripts for copyediting, production, and permissions review; routing manuscripts and proofs for editorial and authorial review; and mailing finished copies to contributors and publicity contacts. Professionally interacting with authors, production, permissions, marketing, and sales staff to relay messages and follow up on requests/information, and in general, anticipating when to proactively act on messages. Administrative management such as organizing and maintaining files and databases for both frontlist and backlist titles, tracking stages of production and their deadlines, tracking and processing contracts and payments, etc. Assisting with conducting sales research into particular titles for potential acquisition. Coordinating review programs for market research: finding instructors to serve as editorial reviewers, soliciting reviews via surveys and tracking their deadlines, managing payments, reading and formatting completed reviews, and providing executive summary documents of the research findings. Creating, editing, and proofing Excel and Word documents to support projects and/or office responsibilities. Line-editing manuscripts, some marketing materials, and other internal documents. Requirements: | Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree. Employment eligibility to work with W. W. Norton & Company in the US is required. Must be able to work from Norton’s New York City Headquarters. Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communications skills. Must be able to anticipate needs and deliver timely, relevant solutions and actions. Must be able to develop rapport and relationships with all levels of employees. Must be seen as knowledgeable and capable of handling sensitive, critical information. Must be proactive, flexible, and adaptive in a rapidly changing environment and adjust with a "can-do" attitude. Must be self-directed and independent. Must have good time management skills, be organized, and be capable of multitasking across departments, activities, and projects. Must be detail-oriented, making sure that all aspects of their daily activities are handled with accuracy, with minimal mistakes. Mastery of email and calendar management tools required, specifically Outlook. Proficiency in Word and Excel. Compensation and Benefits* Annual compensation for this role is $48,000. All salaries and salary ranges posted by Norton may vary depending on experience, skills, location, and like considerations.
