Position Description and Responsibilities

*Works closely with the journals' editors to help them determine editorial direction, evaluate and improve content, and develop new areas or new types of content. Provides follow-through to ensure changes are implemented, integrating any new processes into back-office systems.
*Manages manuscript submission processes, ensuring rapid turnaround for all manuscripts
-Tracks and reviews performance of peer reviewers, Editors, and internal editorial staff
-Evaluates internal procedures to ensure that the manuscript review process is as painless as possible for authors, reviewers and editors
-Coordinates changes/updates to the manuscript submission and tracking system as needed
-Prepares statistical reports for distribution as required
*Hires, trains, supervises, develops, and evaluates editorial staff
*Keeps Editor(s)-in-Chief apprised of journal status, tracking relevant indicators (such as acceptance rate, triage rate, time to publication, etc.). Alerts EIC of any problem areas or of Senior Editors who may be causing delays in MS flow.
*Plans, prepares materials for, and does presentations at Editorial Board Meetings, Editorial Retreats, and scheduled conference calls
*Analyzes competitive journals and information products; identifies key distinguishing characteristics; suggests changes to gain competitive advantage.
*Drafts correspondence for editors, such as manuscript solicitations, Editorial Board invitations, and responses to author and reviewer correspondence.
*May assign submitted manuscripts to appropriate Senior Editor for handling
*Oversees maintenance of the peer reviewer file and editorial board file in the manuscript submission and tracking system
*Works with publications marketing staff to promote the journal to readers and authors
-Helps to identify articles to promote, obtaining author and editor agreement on choices
-Helps to identify potentially relevant audiences and meetings for journal promotion; select materials to send to meetings that support this effort
-Provides direction for and review ad copy, email blasts, online banner ads for the journal
*Works with communications and media relations staff to promote journal content to the public, coordinating press releases with the editor, managing embargo dates, etc.
*Works with internal staff and AACR's online journal hosting vendor to develop and implement innovative electronic features and services for the journals.
*With Publisher and Editorial Director, develops the journal's budget and monitors expenditures.
*Works with production department to ensure smooth flow of manuscripts for publication.

Position Requirements

*Minimum of a Bachelor's degree, preferably in a scientific field
*Advanced degree a plus
*5 to 10 years of experience as a Managing Editor or senior-level journal manager for scientific or other scholarly publications.
*Excellent spelling, grammar and writing skills.
*Scientific background or knowledge, particularly in the areas of molecular and cellular biology, is preferred.
*Ability to interact effectively with external editors, authors, and reviewers, as well as with internal colleagues at all levels of the organization.
*Proven record as a manager of both people and processes.
*Knowledge of scientific terminology and usage.
*Proficiency with computers essential; familiarity with MS Office suite of programs, Adobe Acrobat.
*Experience with online manuscript submission and tracking systems, and electronic publishing processes preferred.
